Girl time - when your granddaughter spends the week...you might just get a bit crafty!

For one week this summer our 11-year-old granddaughter, Bekah, left behind her 4 brothers and her parents to spend a little time with just her Nana and Papa on the new homestead. It was probably a bit too quiet for her, except perhaps the 4:00 am wake-up call by our 2 Roosters!

We had fun crafting (at least I did!) We made cookies, canned blueberry jam, made zucchini bread from our abundance of squash, scavenged for eggs, picked produce from the gardens - she loves tomatoes which came in really handy since we are getting so many ripe ones right now!  We made a few hobo bags, made some crafty things with pine cones and wood ornaments and glued up some glass garden sculptures to add a little color and sparkle to the flowers beds outside.

She is quite the budding artist and worked on her sketches in her sketchbook daily.  She's taking after her older brother I think in the art department which is so cool.

She learned to feed and let the chickens out to free-range every day, checked for eggs and helped corral the chickens and guineas back into the coop at night.

We shared some of the meal prep and clean up. (Fun to have help in the kitchen!) She learned to sort our trash into the compost pile, burn pile, or recycle bin. (No garbage collection where we live so,  we burn what we can, sort the rest and run it into town to the large community recycle bin.) It works.

We washed our new "un-paper" paper towels and folded them at least every other day to keep the supply baskets full. Which by the way has been one of the best decisions we've made. I highly recommend choosing cloth over paper.

We also went on a hike...and no,  not just to the mailbox in case some of you were wondering! (Although we did that too.)
We watched "Princess and the Frog" just us 2 girls. Stayed up too late some nights and slept in too long some mornings!

All in all, it was a really fun week. Hoping we'll make this an annual event!

Trying out the new hobo bag she made!
