Eggstra Eggstra read all about it!

We finally have more than one hen laying eggs!  Oh, what a happy day!  

I have been so excited to have chickens...for years I have been wishing for them and then the day finally came when the day-old peeps made their way home with us. But somehow, I don't think I was quite prepared for the wait...for eggs.  Now don't get me wrong, our meat bird blessed us with eggs at 15 weeks, so it's not that we haven't experienced the pure joy of finding a beautiful egg waiting for us.  But we do like our eggs...waiting for one hen to lay enough for a full breakfast...lets just say we've had to keep bringing them home from the store, but not anymore!

We've finally crossed over to the egg-laying stage of chicken ownership and I gotta say it was well worth the wait!  How fun to see what the hens have left for you each morning. (With our chickens free-ranging in the afternoons we may not be finding all the eggs! We found one just
sitting on the ground yesterday.)

I am also glad we chose several different breeds for hens - it's more interesting to see the various colors and assorted egg sizes.  And it's exciting to have our own constant source of protein to go along with our homegrown fruits and veggies.  Progressing toward a more self-sufficient lifestyle one step at a time.
