Our chicks are on the move...on the move...hallelujah...our chicks are on the move!

It has taken us way longer than we ever thought to get the chickens into their new Coop, but they have finally MOVED in!  (Well technically they only moved into the enclosed run portion of their coop, but hey!  They are finally all together in one place!).  And...we did have some major life events that took time away from our build.  Funny how life does that right?  Thankful we have this much accomplished.

Our Barred Rock Rooster - King of our Hill
For now, I'm happy, the chicks and guineas are happy.  The nesting boxes and enclosed coop still need to be completed, but with the summer months upon us, I think the birds are happy to just be experiencing their new found freedom in the run and we are happy to have them farther away from the house! (Those of you who keep chickens will understand!)

I do think they have the best spot on our property, perched on the edge of the hillside overlooking the driveway and the orchard, surrounded by trees and the shade they will provide from the hot summer sun and lots of fresh air.  The Guineas and the Chickens are getting along which makes us really happy.  We knew if they were raised together they should be fine.  But, we had to separate them for a few months as they had all grown too big to share the same space.  After a little jockeying for one to hold the position of "King of the Hill"...they've settled into a little flock of sorts quite nicely.

The younger birds (of which there are 7) are still in a feed trough covered with netting to keep them separated until they are bigger and can hold their own with the larger birds, but they too are inside the chicken run.

the buffs, easter eggers, and polish
And...now we wait...for eggs of course!  The older hens are now 12 weeks old, so hoping in 8 weeks maybe we'll see our first egg? Yeah...don't ask how much that first egg will be worth! They sure have a LOT of egg-laying ahead to start earning their keep around here!
