Progress...one day at a time
We've been living here now for about 6 weeks. Still seems so surreal but loving every moment of it. It's so quiet and peaceful, a slower pace than we're used to and I've gotta say, I highly recommend the slower pace. Enjoy each moment, they come and go so quickly!
We've struggled with the well we inherited with this property, either we seem to have too little water pressure or too much, we've changed out the pressure switch twice - one gave us too little no matter what adjustments were made and the newer one is way too high no matter what we adjust it to, so we turn it on, fill the tanks and shut it off. A small inconvenience but we have water! (Makes me think of those who had to haul water in every day, back in the day, so I am thankful for the ability to simply hit a switch and get water - both hot and cold!) A permit fix will be found one of these days...trusting sooner rather than later!
2 of the 3 heat pumps that came with this house had various issues, both are now repaired and one replaced. There are 3 of them to heat and cool this house, we hope to change the layout of the heat runs and remove one of the heat pumps. That will delay the interior finishing but we think it will be worth it in the long run not to be running 3 units all at once to heat or cool the entire house. One for upstairs and one for down should be more than sufficient.
The tile work is finished in the first bathroom and we can all shower indoors. How exciting...well okay at least I'm excited! And it turned out really nice, subway tiles go up the walls about 2/3 of the entire bath and to the ceiling in the shower area. As soon as the towel bars are mounted and the painting is done I'll post a few pictures.
Another big improvement, we've spread a load of gravel at the top of the driveway, so no more trudging through the mud when it rains! Clay soil makes the slipperiest mud! Hard as a rock when it's dry but when it rains...water just sits on top and makes it really mucky! I've also learned rock is expensive! One load was over $330 and we'll need at least 4-5 more loads to finish the driveway, but its a start and that feels great!
We've been spreading 5 old bales of hay in the orchard to keep the weeds from growing up through that rock hard clay soil in the spring, or at least that's what we're hoping if we can spread it deep enough. We'll add some topsoil and more compost in the spring and we'll keep working toward something more manageable. That's the plan. Time will tell.
The puppy brought us a gift this week, a half-eaten deer leg and left it at the front door! Probably found it out in the woods... at least it wasn't a snake! (oh how I fear that day!) She has also brought us numerous field mice. Gosh, she is fast on her feet. Just wish she wasn't so intent on sharing her gifts with us and trying to bring them inside with her! This city girl is learning to live country...one day at a time!
